WORLD review

One of the most highly anticipated shows of this year’s Air New Zealand Fashion Week didn’t fail to impress.

As expected the avant-garde label World, put on a show which revelled in luxury and excess and saw a triumphant and somewhat over-the-top return to the New Zealand runway. If the rest of us had been whispering about economic recessions and the dreaded “tightening of our purse-strings,” the design team behind World certainly weren’t having a bar of it.

Key pieces from the collection were the jewel-coloured silk cocktail dresses in fuchsia, mustard and deep purple. The over-sized bows and sash were also a charming touch. The highlight of the collection was the excruciatingly chic black tailored dress teamed with an over-sized crystal studded hat. I challenge anyone to look at this dress and not fall instantly in love with it. Another highlight were the Swarovski crystal studded blazers, vests and tailored suits which marched down the runway as well as the silver tuxedo covered completely in the crystals.

While the bold and theatrical label has never made any attempts to be wearable or accessible, there were certain pieces which even the shyest of us love to wear. The luxe fabrics and fabulous tailoring of many of the dresses would see any fashion fan in heaven. The menswear was also strong with super-colourful cartoon-ish tailored jackets and the fun but impractical accessories – bright orange gloves, bags and pill brooches.

There was nothing subtle from this collection, including the title, “There is no Depression in New Zealand.” Everything was exaggerated from the cute and colourful bows to the hats on the male models, to the outrageous headgear. This collection was World’s way of showing the New Zealand fashion press that although they’ve been away for the last couple of years, they still know how to put on a great show to wow crowds at home.

The Walter's Prize

I went to see the Walter's Prize finalists at the Auckland Art Gallery today. I was so blown away I had to a post! There are four finalists battling it out for the top art prize in NZ for the next couple of months and I found it really hard to choose a favourite. My top three Ack by Peter Robinson which was a humongous polystyrene sculpture which invaded two rooms and punched a hole through a wall, Digital Marae by Lisa Reihana which was a series of large-scale digital prints of Maori mythical figures put in a modern context and Cloud by John Reynolds.

What struck me most was Cloud - the tiny canvases about 7000 of them covered the walls completely pulling viewers in. Looking at the work, I felt like I was floating on a cloud. There was wall after wall of small white canvases no larger than my palm with words in silver paint on them .. Each one had a different kiwi expression and trying to read them all was definately an experience! The photos don't do the work justice, you really have to see it up close to fully appreciate it.

I can't wait to hear who finally wins in october. If you're in the Auckland area, head over to the New Gallery. You'll thank me for it!

things I love thursday

Wow I feel like I haven't done one of these in ages! Maybe that's why life's been so dull recently. Taking time to chill & reflect on the things I love is super-important. I should definately try make time to do it more often! This thursday, I love:
  • Catching up with my gorgeous friends for lunch. We argue a lot and don't always agree but I love them to bits & would be lost without them!
  • The cheesecake I found in the fridge. Yum!
  • Planning for my big picnic/tea party in the holidays. I promise to post photos!
  • The thought of only one more day until two weeks of holidays.
  • Laying out in the sun at Albert Park & then realising I was late to art history but not caring all that much.
  • My dad's secret surprise. More on this later.
  • Practising driving my car & making tonnes of CDs with driving songs on them.
  • The book club my friends and I are making
  • The fact that the sun was out all day today with not a raincloud in sight. I smell a change in the air :)
  • The fact that I was asked by my brother to pick out a tie for his ball & spending an afternoon roaming men's clothing stores with him.
Go on, try it. What do you love today?

Spring is here

Spring Fashion Quarterly was so fabulous I just couldn't wait to do a post! I've read a ton of blogs where they review magazines - one of my favourite being Girl with a satchel - but they never do any NZ mags. So here I go!

FQ has quite a high turnover of editors so I wasn't surprised to see a new one, Fiona Hawtin in this issue. Although I really liked the last ed, MWK's style, Fiona has done an amazing job with her first issue with what I hope is plenty more to come. Everyone I showed this issue to was also impressed with the colour schemes, beautiful editorials and features.

The Spring Fever page was gorgeous showing cute, floral and flirty pieces perfect for spring. The coral Hailwood shirt and the adorable Luella sunglasses are on my wishlist. Pre-love bug also caught my eye - showing a collection of lovely vintage-inspired clothes and accessories. The Lisa Hosking daisy jewellery is beautiful; I want to get my hands on the ring!

My favourite pages were the striking photos from the Paris shoot. I loved every single outfit although this page has to take the cake. I love the laid-back styling which would look at right at home both in Paris and on the streets of Auckland. The guide to France is a pull-out-and-keep page I'll definately use if I find myself in France in the near future.

In short, this issue of FQ reminded me of why I love fashion so much!! Bring on September & the warmer weather now, please!

Last day of magic

The kills'-inspired outfit! Had to share :)
How AWESOME is that t-shirt?! I've been trying to find it online and have it shipped here but General Pants co don't have an online store and Ksubi's online store is crap. :( Aw.
