One of the most highly anticipated shows of this year’s Air New Zealand Fashion Week didn’t fail to impress.
As expected the avant-garde label World, put on a show which revelled in luxury and excess and saw a triumphant and somewhat over-the-top return to the New Zealand runway. If the rest of us had been whispering about economic recessions and the dreaded “tightening of our purse-strings,” the design team behind World certainly weren’t having a bar of it.
Key pieces from the collection were the jewel-coloured silk cocktail dresses in fuchsia, mustard and deep purple. The over-sized bows and sash were also a charming touch. The highlight of the collection was the excruciatingly chic black tailored dress teamed with an over-sized crystal studded hat. I challenge anyone to look at this dress and not fall instantly in love with it. Another highlight were the Swarovski crystal studded blazers, vests and tailored suits which marched down the runway as well as the silver tuxedo covered completely in the crystals.
While the bold and theatrical label has never made any attempts to be wearable or accessible, there were certain pieces which even the shyest of us love to wear. The luxe fabrics and fabulous tailoring of many of the dresses would see any fashion fan in heaven. The menswear was also strong with super-colourful cartoon-ish tailored jackets and the fun but impractical accessories – bright orange gloves, bags and pill brooches.
There was nothing subtle from this collection, including the title, “There is no Depression in New Zealand.” Everything was exaggerated from the cute and colourful bows to the hats on the male models, to the outrageous headgear. This collection was World’s way of showing the New Zealand fashion press that although they’ve been away for the last couple of years, they still know how to put on a great show to wow crowds at home.
